LIMA, Peru – Peru's foreign minister says his country hopes that a bilateral investment accord to be signed this week with Japan can open the door to a free trade pact with the Asian nation..
Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde says Peru and Japan will sign the accord this week when Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso arrives in Lima for the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit, which will bring together leaders from 21 Pacific Rim nations.. The foreign minister said Wednesday that Aso's arrival in Peru represents a "positive turn" in bilateral relations with Japan, which cooled in recent years when Japan refused to extradite Peru's ex-President Alberto Fujimori, who took refuge in the country after his government collapsed in a corruption scandal.
